List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Prepare for trimming | 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Select personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness. 1.3 Plan material trimming sequences in line with work order. |
2. Trim panels to size | 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices. 2.2 Set feed system to stop material automatically for trimming to be completed. 2.3 Monitor trimming sequence until new panel production run ceases. 2.4 Check cuts for length within set tolerance. 2.5 Dispose of incorrect cuts, off cuts and defective material in line with environmental protection practices. 2.6 Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order. |
3. Complete operator maintenance | 3.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment 3.2 Check saw blades for bluntness or damage. 3.3 Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations. 3.4 Keep saw area clear of dust, off-cuts and debris in line with organisational safety procedures. 3.5 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel. |
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
produce trimmed panels in line with individual work orders prescribing different lengths and tolerances and number of panels; types of panels includes:
medium density fibreboard
laminated veneer
chipboard
fibreboard
plywood
continuous ply
across the above jobs, complete cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass set for multiple cuts of the same size
for each of the above jobs, stack batches of cut panels in storage location according to common length
after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the saw used.
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:
reducing water and energy use
cleaning of plant, tools and equipment
disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste
typical timber panel defects and how they affect ability to produce quality trimmed panels:
warp
wane
cupping
shakes
insect defects
knots
resin pockets
cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass
range of industry standard lengths, cross sections and tolerances and applicable terminology
typical flow of material supply in and out of the trimming area
storage layout and categories for stacking finished panels
purpose, features and operation of equipment used to trim new panels to size:
automated trimming saws
conveyor belt systems
methods for assessing saw blade condition and completing and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance for saws
organisational procedures specific to trimming new panels to size:
workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment
communication reporting lines
recording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.
The following resources must be made available:
automated trimming saws
maintenance tools and equipment for saws
consumable saw blades
personal protective equipment suitable for trimming panels to size
a diverse range of commercial panels
manufacturers’ instructions for use and maintenance of equipment
work order with specific instructions for trimming and storing panels
template documents for recording production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements
relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
organisational procedures for trimming panels to size.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
